How much wallpaper paste do I need?
Measure the area that will actually receive paste, add a suitable working reserve and divide by the coverage of one packet or tub. Round up to a whole pack. Use the coverage for your exact wallpaper type and adhesive, because the same packet can cover different areas at different mixing strengths.
The wallpaper paste calculator above works with dry powder packets and ready-mixed adhesive. It accepts coverage per pack, per kilogram, per litre or per US gallon, plus consumption in grams per square metre or square foot. It keeps dry powder, mixed adhesive and mixing water separate.
Choose the right type before calculating
Use an adhesive approved for the wallpaper backing and the prepared wall. Paper, non-woven, vinyl and specialist wallcoverings can require different products or preparation. Whether you paste the wall or the paper comes from the wallpaper instructions. It is not a setting that automatically changes every adhesive's coverage.
Self-adhesive peel-and-stick wallpaper normally relies on its own adhesive. Do not add wallpaper paste unless the manufacturer specifically instructs you to. Pre-pasted wallpaper has a factory-applied adhesive coating and its own activation procedure. The calculator does not assume a separate paste purchase for either type.
This distinction matters when planning Decords self-adhesive wall coverings. Check the instructions for the exact item instead of applying the requirements of traditional pasted wallpaper to it.
Measure the pasted area
For each rectangular wall, multiply width by height. Add the walls together. You can enter repeated walls using the count field, add up to twelve different wall rows, or enter a total area you have already measured.
Subtract only openings or surfaces that will not receive adhesive. Add window reveals, returns and any other pasted surfaces separately. For paste-the-paper work, include material that receives paste and is then trimmed away. If you leave small openings in the gross estimate for simplicity, do not also add their area a second time as waste.
Actual pasted area = measured wall area − uncovered openings + extra pasted area. Purchase-estimate area = actual pasted area × (1 + reserve percentage ÷ 100).
The starting reserve of 10% is an editable planning allowance, not a universal manufacturer's rule. An absorbent or rough wall can affect consumption. Choose a suitable prepared surface and the appropriate label rate first. A large reserve cannot make an incompatible adhesive or poorly prepared wall suitable.
Read the coverage units carefully
Select the format printed on your label, then enter its value. The area unit for label coverage is separate from the unit used to measure your room. For example, you can measure the walls in metres and enter a US product's coverage in square feet per US gallon.

The formulas use matching area units. The calculator performs the area conversion for you. One square foot is 0.09290304 m². It does not convert kilograms into litres because that would require the specific adhesive's density. US gallons and Imperial gallons are different. The gallon option here means US gallons only.
If coverage is stated as a range, use the rate that applies to your material and surface. For a cautious estimate, use the lower area covered per pack, kilogram or litre. If the label gives consumption in g/m², a higher consumption means more adhesive is needed. Do not confuse these two directions.
Dry powder: packet coverage and mixing water
For powder, use the area covered by one full packet at the correct dilution. Packet mass alone does not tell you how many walls it will cover. The optional powder field records the dry grams you will purchase. The water field must come from the matching row of the manufacturer's instructions.
For example, the Pattex Direct Control technical sheet lists 200 g with 4 L of water and approximately 22 to 26 m² for its non-woven paste-the-wall application. Its sizing row is different. Check your current local packaging; this is a product-specific example, not a recommendation for every wallpaper.
Use whole packets when the mixing instructions require them. The calculator reports water for each full packet and the total if all required packets are mixed. This is a planning total, not an instruction to mix all the paste at once. Water added is not the final volume of mixed paste.
Worked example: a 4 × 3 m room
Take two walls 4 m wide and two walls 3 m wide, all 2.5 m high. The gross area is 35 m². Subtract 3 m² of unpasted openings to get 32 m². With a 10% reserve, the purchase estimate uses 35.2 m².
Using the example packet coverage of 22 m², 35.2 ÷ 22 = 1.6 packets. Round up to two. At 200 g per packet, that means 400 g of dry powder. At 4 L of water per full packet, mixing both would require 8 L of water. Mix according to the label and only as needed.
At an illustrative price of €7 per packet, the cost is €14. If you already own one suitable unopened packet, the new purchase is one packet for €7. The total job still requires two packets. The example button enters these values.
Ready-mixed adhesive: kilograms and litres
Ready-mixed paste is purchased as usable adhesive, so its container mass or volume is different from the dry powder in a packet. If a chosen product covers 5 m² per kg, a 5 kg tub covers 25 m² at that rate. For 35.2 m² including reserve, you need 7.04 kg and therefore two 5 kg tubs if no suitable stock is already available.
Wallrock Power Adhesive's instructions give 1 kg per 5 m² for most suitable products and state that this adhesive should not be thinned with water. They also identify exceptions, including thermal liners and vinyl overlap applications. Check compatibility as well as coverage.
With volume-based coverage, use the same volume unit as the label and the tub. Changing the coverage format clears the value and container size so that an old number cannot silently become a different unit. The calculator does not add mixing water to ready-mixed adhesive.
Primer, sizing and lining paper are separate applications
Wall preparation and wallpaper bonding are different jobs. Estimate a separate primer using its own coverage. If the manufacturer allows the same powder product for sizing at a different dilution, calculate that application separately with the correct sizing coverage and water amount.
A lining-paper layer also needs its own adhesive estimate. Calculate each layer with its specified product and rate. Do not automatically double the area because an instruction mentions both the wall and wallpaper. First determine what the quoted coverage actually includes.
Frequently asked questions
Can I calculate paste by the number of wallpaper rolls?
Only when the label's roll definition matches your rolls and application. Roll widths and lengths vary, and purchased wallpaper includes trimming and pattern waste. Measured pasted area is usually clearer. Use the wallpaper roll calculator separately to plan the wallpaper itself.
Should I subtract windows and doors?
Subtract the part that will not receive adhesive, then add any pasted reveals or returns. If paste goes on paper that will later be cut away around an opening, include that pasted material in the extra-area field. The aim is adhesive application area, not simply the visible wallpaper area.
Can I use paste left from an earlier project?
The stock field counts suitable unopened whole packets or tubs of the same size and product. Check storage condition and the manufacturer's shelf life before counting them. Part-used containers and previously mixed powder paste are not automatically treated as a full pack.
Does the reserve change the mixing strength?
No. Reserve increases the estimated quantity to buy. It never changes the water-to-powder instructions or permits dilution to stretch a tub. Keep the specified application strength.
Does this guarantee adhesion or removability?
No. The result estimates quantity from the inputs. Wallpaper backing, surface preparation, adhesive compatibility, application and drying conditions determine performance. Follow both the wallpaper and adhesive instructions, including any required test area.
